பாடசாலை வரலாறு

Any person trying to write an article about Vayavilan Madhya Maha Vidyalayam (Vayavilan Government Central College) will sure be reminded of Dr. C.W.W. Kannangara, the Father of Free Education in Sri Lanka.

A lawyer by profession, Dr. Kannangara entered politics in 1923. During his term of office as Minister of Education, far reaching changes were brought about in the sphere of education. Free education in mother tongue up to the university, free mid-day meal for school children, improvements in tertiary education, and introduction of Central Schools were all implemented during the term of Dr. C. W. W. Kannangara. His greatest contribution undoubtedly was the Free Education Scheme. His vocation centred Central College system provided free education to the poor who could not afford to pay for education in private schools. Central Colleges were later called Madhya Maha Vidyalaya in native languages and Vayavilan Madhya Maha Vidyalayam is one such school.

The origin of Vayavilan Madhya Maha Vidyalayam began when leading personalities from Vayavilan, Kurumbasiddy and other adjoining villages met on 15.10.1945 at Vayavilan Veluppillai Vidyalayam with a view to laying the foundation for a comprehensive school for their area under Dr. Kannangara’s Central College scheme. They passed a resolution urging the government to open such a school at Palaly using the vacant military buildings and elected a committee to implement it. Eelakesari Mr. N. Ponniah, the then Chairman of Myliddy Village Council, Mr. V. Rasanayagam, a laywer and Mr. T. Sinnadurai, a teacher were elected the president, secretary and treasurer respectively. Dr. S. Nadesan, a member of the then State Council was elected the patron.

Realizing the difficulties in obtaining the military buildings at Palay in time, the president of the committee, Mr. Ponniah offered his Meenadchi Farm to establish the school. He also volunteered to build two buildings and provide furniture for the school at his own expense.

Indicating Mr. Ponniah’s magnanimous offer, Dr. S. Nadesan continued to press the government for the school and succeeded in obtaining the permission and the school was declared open by the Father of Free Education, Dr. C.W.W.Kannangara on 16.01.1946 on Meenadchi Farm. Since Meenadchi Farm situated in Kurumbasiddy, the school was named Kurumbasiddy Central College but it was later changed to Vayavilan Central College.

Mr. K. Karalasingam, B.Sc., Dip.Ed. was appointed the first principal with three other teachers. Students enrolment at that time was 115. Teaching was done in the two buildings built by Mr. Ponniah.

Mr. Karalasingam’s role in developing the school was immense. The government built the model school during his time and later a girls hostel was also added. Mr. K. Navaratnarajah, B.A., Dip. Ed. became the next principal who was follwed by Mr. E.V.J. Hensman, B.A., P.G.T. during whose tenure facilities for teaching Agriculure were improved and advanced level classes were introduced.

Mr. P. Sabaratnam, B.Sc., Dip. Ed. took over from Mr. Hensman as the fourth principal during whose tenure the college celebrated its Silver Jubilee. He was followed by Mr. R. Ramasamy, B.A., Dip. Ed. who worked hard for the completion of a two-story building in front of the school. The contributions made by Mr. S. Arumugam, the Deputy Principal, and Mr. V. Kandavanam, the Sectional Head and Deputy Principal, to the development and smooth running of the school must not go unrecognized. Mr. Kandavanam who gave the school an anthem was chiefly responsible for opening the school library for the students and for many a religious and literary meeting.

Vayavilan Madhya Maha Vidyalayam is a composite school where all subjects in the ministry’s curriculum were taught until 1990 when the unfortunate displacement took place. With the usual Science and arts subjects, the choice of learning Agriculture, Metal Work, Wood Work, Weaving, Sewing, Home Science, Book Keeping, Commerce, Economics, Shorthand, Typing, Health Science, Music, Art, Dance were provided for the students. Vayavilan M.M.V. also became the first school to teach Drama and Theatre at Advanced Level in 1978.

Mr. A.S. Nadarasa, B.A., Dip. Ed., the principal during the most difficult times in the history of the school, tried his best to keep the school running, moving from place to place. Today’s Vayavilan M.M.V. is the miraculous gift of continued perseverance, untiring hard work, courageous personality and sincere sacrifice of Mr. Nadarasa who has been acclaimed as an able principal who succeeded in building a kingdom out of nothing.
